What We Do

Heritage Project Planning and Development

We have a proven track record in designing projects for the museum and heritage sector. Examples of past work by our team members include:

Cataloguing projects for
  • Auckland War Memorial Museum
  • University College London
  • Edinburgh University
  • Kington Museum
  • The National Museum of New Zealand/Te Papa

Community Heritage projects for
  • Kington Area Regeneration Partnership (Kington Camp Project Phases 1 and 2)
  • Murray and Lower Darling Rivers Indigenous Nations Confederation
  • Cane River African Diaspora Archaeology Project, Natchitoches, Louisiana
  • Cane River Historic Documents Project

Website Design, Development and Hosting

HistorySpace delivers websites for museums and the heritage sector. Standard websites are coded and hosted inhouse, those requiring more specialised coding are outsourced to Mercurytide, an awardwinning website design company.

Standard websites characteristically include 5 pages, such as: Home, About Us, Contact, Gallery and Projects. A 'shop' page is also available. We maintain the website and provide domain name registration and hosting. www.mycountryenterprises.com is designed and maintained for a cultural heritage tourism business in Australia and is an example of a standard website.

More specialist websites include those which are database driven and can be maintained by your organisation. These are perfect for museums who wish to put collections online, wish to change page contents frequently, and community projects who wish to have project results, such as oral history sound clips, searchable by web-users. For an example of a more specialist website see: www.kingtoncamp.co.uk.

Fundraising and Grant applications

We can assist in grant applications, have a wide knowledge of grants available, and a proven track record - we have raised over £100,000 for heritage projects since January 2006. This includes funds raised from the Big Lottery Fund, the Heritage Lottery Fund, the MLA, and the Australian Institute for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS).

ICT Solutions to Collections Management

HistorySpace specialises in digitisation projects – placing your collections on database, photographing objects, scanning images etc. We commonly use either Microsoft Access or MODES (which must be purchased by your organisation), both of which can be exported to alternative formats if, for example, this suits your web accessibility or already installed museum software. We are experienced with Spectrum Standards.

Museum Photography

Photographing the objects in your collection and capturing digital images of documents and photographs is a key component of digitisation projects. We provide an experienced photographer and all equipment necessary.

Educational Resources

We design and deliver educational materials for museums and heritage projects, in a range of formats including paper based and interactive digital materials, loan boxes and activity plans.

Oral History Recording and Presentation

We design and deliver oral history projects, and can provide a range of assistance such as project development, training, interviewing, transcribing, producing oral history books or editing audio data for presentation of sound clips on, for example Powerpoint, CD or via website. For an online example see www.kingtoncamp.co.uk

Access and Audience Development

We provide advice on access and audience development drawing upon experience in demographic profiling on a variety of types of heritage sites, from municipal parks to historic houses.

Interpretation Planning

Developing ways that information can be understood by audiences is a thread which runs through our work, from designing websites to written materials. We can offer a range of approaches from broad brush development of overarching interpretation concepts to design briefs.

Indigenous Cultural Heritage: Accessibility, Repatriation, Information Provision

HistorySpace works for Indigenous communities and museums to assist with policy development, information provision and repatriation. We draw upon over 15 years research and practical experience in this area, including work in the UK, Australia, New Zealand and North America.
